Methane, which is the primary component of natural gas and a potent driver of the greenhouse effect, can be monetized by extracting it from landfills.
One of the largest Bitcoin mining companies in the United States, Marathon Digital Holdings, has launched a pilot project to mine this cryptocurrency using electric power generated from landfill methane gas, the corporation announced to CoinDesk this Thursday.
In Utah, a pilot-scale energy production unit with a projected capacity of 280 kilowatts was installed. Marathon is partnering with Nodal Power, a company specializing in green energy development. Methane, the primary component of natural gas, is a powerful greenhouse gas, as it warms the planet approximately 80 times more than carbon dioxide.
Naturally occurring methane in landfills, biological waste, and other locations often goes untapped. Bitcoin miners, like Marathon, are in a unique position to help convert that harmful gas into a productive source of clean and renewable energy, stated Marathon's President and CEO, Fred Thiel.
